MAISON SUGER
A home for humanities and social sciences.
Successful collaboration is fundamental to meaningful, impactful humanities and social sciences research. This spirit animates the Maison Suger – established by the FMSH as a researcher residence and hub of international cooperation.
Located in Paris' Latin Quarter, Maison Suger is composed of nearly three dozen residences that can house approximately 200 visiting researchers each year.
They also have access to independent work facilities and shared social spaces
that incubate and promote cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Residents include scholars at risk who are unable to work freely in their home
countries – for reasons of conflict or other barriers like censorship based upon their areas of study.
While researchers may hold positions at other Paris research and academic institutions, they all find their home-away-from-home at the Maison Suger – where we have cultivated an environment to encourage freedom of thought and support cross-disciplinary,
cross-cultural collaboration to create knowledge and understanding.
Since its opening, the Maison Suger has been an example of international cooperation. Nearly half of the funds to modernize and reconstruct the building were donated through multinational philanthropy, including corporate, foundation, and private individual gifts.
After three-plus decades of operation, these forward-looking donors have enabled more than 7,000 researchers to benefit from and grow within the supportive walls of the Maison Suger.
